Commissioned Officer

You lead platoons, companies, or battalions depending on your rank, and every decision you make affects the lives of the people under your command. You came in with a degree and a commission — through OCS, ROTC, or a service academy — and now you're responsible for mission accomplishment, troop welfare, and enough PowerPoint to fill a server farm. The pay is decent, the responsibility is massive, and you salute a lot of people who salute you back.

What you'll actually do

• 01Plan and lead military operations — from training exercises to real-world missions
• 02Brief commanders and attend more meetings than you ever thought possible
• 03Manage unit resources including personnel, equipment, and budgets
• 04Write OPDs, OPERs, and award recommendations until your eyes blur
• 05Develop subordinate leaders and build unit cohesion
• 06Take responsibility for everything your unit does or fails to do — literally everything
