EV Technician

Green Energy

You diagnose and repair electric vehicles, which means you're an auto mechanic who traded oil stains for electrical burns. You'll troubleshoot battery management systems, high-voltage powertrains, and software issues that require a laptop instead of a wrench. The cars are quieter, the technology is more complex, and one wrong move with a 400-volt battery pack is the kind of mistake you don't get to learn from twice.

Tools & Technical Skills

  • High-voltage battery pack diagnostics and repair
  • EV powertrain systems (motors, inverters, chargers)
  • Manufacturer diagnostic software (Tesla Toolbox, GM GDS2)
  • High-voltage safety and lockout/tagout procedures
  • CAN bus and vehicle network troubleshooting
  • Regenerative braking system service
  • OEM EV certification programs (Tesla, Rivian, Ford)

  • Continuous learning mindset
  • Safety discipline with high-voltage systems
  • Diagnostic problem-solving
  • Customer communication about new technology
  • Adaptability to rapid platform changes

What you'll actually do

  • 01Diagnose EV-specific issues using manufacturer software that's more like debugging code than turning wrenches
  • 02Service high-voltage battery packs following safety protocols where skipping a step could literally kill you
  • 03Repair electric drivetrains, inverters, and charging systems that most traditional mechanics can't touch
  • 04Update vehicle software and calibrate systems because modern EVs are computers on wheels
  • 05Explain to customers why EV repairs cost differently than gas car repairs — some things are cheaper, some are shockingly not
  • 06Stay current on rapidly evolving EV technology from manufacturers who change their platforms every model year
