Fire Engineer / Lieutenant

You're the one driving the rig and running the pump panel while everyone else gets the glory of going inside. As a lieutenant, you're also babysitting a crew of adrenaline junkies and making split-second decisions that determine whether a bad day stays bad or gets catastrophic. You studied for a brutal promotional exam, you outrank most of your friends now, and yes — it's weird telling people you used to eat cereal with that they need to do better.

What you'll actually do

• 01Drive the engine or ladder truck to calls — and yes, you do get to use the lights and siren
• 02Operate the pump panel and make sure water actually flows when it needs to
• 03Supervise your crew on scene and make tactical decisions in real time
• 04Conduct training drills and mentor probationary firefighters
• 05Handle administrative paperwork that nobody warned you about during promotion prep
• 06Run pre-fire plans and building inspections in your district
• 07Mediate crew disputes because firefighters confined to a station for 24 hours will argue about anything
