Special Education Teacher

Education

You teach students with disabilities — learning differences, autism, emotional disturbances, physical impairments — and create individualized education plans (IEPs) for each one. You'll adapt curriculum, manage behaviors that challenge even veteran teachers, and advocate for students in a system that's chronically underfunded. The paperwork alone could be a full-time job. Teaching is the other full-time job.

What you'll actually do

  • 01Write and implement IEPs that translate legal requirements into actual teaching strategies for each student
  • 02Adapt lessons so the same material works for students reading at grade level and students reading three years below
  • 03Manage classroom behaviors that range from mild inattention to full-blown crises requiring de-escalation training
  • 04Attend IEP meetings with parents, administrators, therapists, and lawyers — because yes, sometimes lawyers show up
  • 05Collaborate with general education teachers who may or may not understand how inclusion is supposed to work
  • 06Document everything because special education is governed by federal law and every missed deadline is a compliance violation
